When Troops Come Home

The American military is run by men and women who volunteer to serve and protect their country. After they serve their time our brave servicemen and women have to prepare to return home. This is a difficult transition for some, and it is important to make the change as painless as possible for these soldiers.

Families look forward for a smooth reunion and return to normal life. This does not always happen, as some people expect too much from the soldier. The wife often hopes that everything will be the same as it was before her husband left; she expects the man to be the same person. She might be disappointed when she finds that the person returning has a lot of problems. It can also affect the children as they need time to get used to their father being at home.

Fortunately, soldiers are usually receiving warm welcomes from their communities. Veterans can utilize the skills they learned in the military to get a good job at home, working as EMTs, firemen, nursing aids or medical transcribers. As these are slower-paced jobs than what they recently did, it may be a slow and painful transition into a new job.

Some soldiers are greatly affected by their experiences overseas, so much so that they develop mental problems. Things like pride and fear of losing their jobs prevent them from seeking help. It is important to let them know that it is okay to speak with a professional.

Fortunately, medical technology is allowing the majority of our wounded troops to return home alive, but the process of healing may take years. It is important to embrace returning soldiers and provide a good support system to allow them to successfully return to their former lives.
