Founded in 1899, the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) was not initially intended to be a social gathering club. It was intended to be an assistance organization. Back then, they would gather around the sick or wounded soldiers and help out their families. They still do that today and since World War I, they have sent out many care packages. The VFW still cares for its members and loved ones, but has expanded its goals to include creating a strong community between its members.
Getting into the VFW was the same then as it is now. Those that served in any branch of the Armed Services that came home honorably are eligible, as long as they can prove citizenship and a tour of duty overseas. Membership dues for the VFW can be paid on an annual basis, or members can choose lifetime membership during enrollment. For men and women that have not served, they can join the VFW auxiliary.
Today many view the VFW as a social group or club because it holds various social functions throughout the year. It can be a safe place for men and women to go out and have a good time in a safe and understanding environment. Although the VFW events serves liquor, it is within a controlled environment that escapes many of the hassles of community clubs or bars. This is all in thanks to the family environment that is found in the VFW. People can gather there and socialize, play games, or connect with one another without a worry in the world.
